GREEN HOMES FOR CHICAGO

This competition entry for the design of an affordable "Green" home in Chicago was selected from over seventy local and international entries. The project explores the concept: To be sustainable the house must be accessible;
to be accessible, the house must be sustainable.

The winning scheme is accessible in the broadest sense:
– Economically accessible
– Accessible for non-traditional family structures.
– Accessible for people with disabilities.

By focusing on issues of indoor air quality, the design specifically addresses the needs of the fastest growing group of people with disabilities: Those who suffer from extreme chemical sensitivity.

This built home will serve the city as a prototype. In cooperation with NHS (Neighborhood Housing Services), the home will be built on multiple sites in Chicago, creating a new, healthy, flexible, sustainable form of affordable, single-family housing.

"We intend to use the homes as an opportunity to make people in Chicago — and across the country — more aware of the need to protect and respect the environment when we make our housing choices."
— Richard M. Daley, Mayor, City of Chicago
